Drum Scanners

Drum scanners are used to capture the highest resolution from an image. Photographs and transparencies are taped, clamped or fitted into a clear drum or cylinder that is spun at a speed exceeding 1,000 RPM. A light source is made to move down the drum one line at a time, focusing on one pixel.

The light is directed from the center of the cylinder in the case of transparencies and a reflective light source is used for opaque items. Drum scanners are unparalleled in the quality of resolution and a good drum scanner can resolve 8,000 to 11,000 dpi optically.

Designed for high volume, drum scanner software is programmed to coordinate several tasks at once. Drum scanners produce superior quality results by the use of photo-multiplier tubes (PMT) with a Density Range of 3.4 - 4.0 with a 'dMax' at the top of that range.
