drum scanning
What is drum scanning?
Drum scanning gets its name from the drum, a clear acrylic cylinder on which the original artwork is mounted for scanning. Drum scanners are used in high-end applications, such as museum-quality archiving of photographs and high-quality print production, because of their ability to produce scans that are superior in resolution, colour gradation, and value structure.
Drum scanning is widely used to scan photographs for magazines, advertisements, trade show displays and even in interior designing owing to the colour liveliness and availability of high resolution images for large format printing.
Advantages of drum scanning
- Smooth grain - The drum scanner’s ability to control aperture and sample area independently is particularly useful for smoothing film grain when scanning black-and white and colour negative originals. The sample size is the area that the scanner encoder reads to create an individual pixel. The aperture is the actual opening that allows light into the optical bench of the scanner.
- Perfect results with film - Drum scanners are capable of scanning both reflective and transmissive artwork and are widely used for scanning film which can be wet-mounted to the scanner drum. Wet mounting in drum scans can be used to conceal scratches and dust on original prints, ensuring the outcome of drum scanning is flawless and realistic.
- Subtle detail capture - In drum scanning, every detail is extracted from photographs, negatives in colour or black and white, transparencies and any flexible materials to generate utmost sharpness in the images. Drum scans are the preferred option for high-end applications because the exceptional sensitivity makes them capable of capturing very subtle details in film originals.
- High resolution - Because drum scanning is capable of resolutions up to 14,000 PPI, its use is generally recommended when a scanned image is going to be enlarged.
